I was really excited about the release of Dance Dance Danseur by George Asakura. Watching the trailer really caught my attention and once I knew episode 1 was released I knew I needed to watch it. I can definitely say episode 1 was so exciting and beautiful. The episode really introduces the concept and storyline. I really liked that the anime touches based on ballet being about passion and not just gender.
Starting at the beginning of the episode we follow the protagonist Junpei Murao to his sister’s ballet recital. Where it is introduced to what ignited Junpei’s passion for ballet. Seeing a male dancer who was graceful, powerful, and his skills is what moved Junpei. During the episode, Junpei also comments “Pika Pika” which translates to glittery or sparkle. Which I thought was adorable!
What drew my attention to the anime was the details in the dancing. From the tip of their fingers to the lines of their backs. The animation is really on point with showing the physical aspects of dancing. The drawing is also beautiful and it captures the movements and grace of ballet.
Especially when the male dancer enters the stage he exudes strength and confidence. His dancing captures your attention and this is exactly how he captures Junpei’s attention.
I also enjoyed that the anime touches on stereotypes. As a child, Junpei was enamored with ballet. But with his friends making fun of it and his dad passing away he decided he needed to be more “manly”. This is why Junpei chose to do Jeet Kune Do like his dad. Setting ballet aside even though it was something that sparked joy for him. As you can see when young Junpei practices ballet he sees sparkles surrounding him and a tingling feeling in his chest.
When Junpei tries ballet again he gets the same explosive feelings. And the sparkles come out! I enjoy seeing the sparkles shine when Junpei is excited and passionate. Just following long Junpei experiences makes me excited for him.Even though Junpei proclaims he won’t be a ballet dancer he can already see himself as one. I find Junpei’s reactions adorable. I love that he sees sparkles surrounding his world. When he dances he can’t contain his excitement and his heart has a “boom” feeling.
Episode 1 left me wanting more and watching Junpei’s growth and development. I am already excited to start on episode 2!
